Welcome to the McCoy-Scott Roots website.

Our grandfather was John David Scott (1886 – 1936) from Spruce Run in Giles County, Virginia. Our grandmother was Lottie Mae Albert Scott (1889 – 1973) from McCoy, Virginia. We are 3rd generation descendants of this couple who married June 12, 1907. The family has thrived because of the life they created, the children they reared, and the pride instilled in each us at being a part of the Scott clan.

As we began our family research, a box of  “old stuff”, hidden away deep in Mamaw’s closet, literally fell into our laps! What gift it proved to be! Inside the dust covered plastic blue box we found treasures – including Granddaddy’s letters to “his girl”. Reading their letters written all those years ago opened up a different world than we knew. Their words sparked an interest within us, their grandchildren, and fueled a curiosity to learn more.

Growing up in McCoy, a stone’s throw away from where she lived, we were familiar with Mamaw’s history – or so we thought — but, we knew little about the Scott’s from Spruce Run. So we chose to begin our research in Giles County. Looking on the Internet. Joining Ancestry.com. Collecting pictures. Phoning people whom we believed had information…some we knew and others who were strangers. By 2014 all of Granddaddy and Mamaw’s children had passed – leaving 15 grandchildren and countless great grandchildren. Now even great-great grandchildren are being born. From 1905 until today there has been a connection between McCoy and Spruce Run and the two families who were forever joined by their marriage. As the family gets together now we look at one another and know that this strong family is John David and Lottie Mae’s greatest legacy.
